According To New Survey Australia Is Very Tolerant Of Gay People

Australia is one of the most tolerant places in the world when it comes to immigrants gay people according to a new survey by the Pew Research Center.

37,653 respondents from 39 countries were polled from March to May of this year to assess the tolerance of gay people in countries throughout the world. 79% of Australians polled for the survey believed homosexuality should be accepted by society, with 83% of respondents aged between 30 and 49 and 77% of those above 50 agreeing with that sentiment.

The study concluded that acceptance levels were closely tied to the pervasiveness of religion.

“Acceptance of homosexuality is particularly
widespread in countries where religion is less central in people’s
lives. These are also among the richest countries in the world,”
the study found. “In contrast, in poorer countries with high levels of religiosity, few believe homosexuality should be accepted by society,”

Australia was trumped only by Spain (88%), Germany (87%) and Canada (80%), however our tolerance percentage is likely to have been much higher considering the sample size of Australian respondents aged 18-29 was too small to register.

Nigeria (1%), Pakistan (2%), Egypt (3%), and Indonesia (3%) ranked among the nations least tolerant of gay people.
