Volcanic Ash Is Still Causing Mass Flight Cancellations To Bali

Look, we know it’s cold as shit at the moment – particularly in the southern states. And that the idea of a sneaky little mid-winter tropical getaway to somewhere much, much warmer is a really bloody nice idea. But if you’ve got grand plans to sneak away to Bali for the weekend, then this is gonna hurt.

Clouds of volcanic ash emanating from the Mount Raung volcano have been drifting across Bali’s Denpasar Airport all week, causing absolute havoc for air travel.
The mountain erupted last Thursday and has been grounding flights in and out of the popular holiday destination all week. But today’s news is no better for prospective travellers.
Jetstar have already announced that all morning flights from Brisbane and Perth have been cancelled. Meanwhile Virgin has grounded all flights from across the nation that were headed towards the Indonesian island, as well as those scheduled to leave Bali today.

A statement issued by Jetstar echoed the sentiments of Virgin.

“We’ve seen unfavourable winds push the ash cloud even closer to Denpasar Airport this morning and we’re not satisfied it is safe to operate services in these conditions.”

“We’ll continue to closely monitor the ash cloud with the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre throughout the day and provide an update on our evening flying this afternoon.”

“We regret the disruption these cancellations have caused travellers, but the safety of our customers and crew is our first priority.”

Mount Raung sits around 150 kilometres to the west of Bali, and is one of the most active volcanoes on the Indonesian island of Java.

Affected customers on both airlines are able to change the flights within a certain period – 7 days for Jetstar, 14 for Virgin – free of charge. If travel within that period is not an option, both airlines are offering passengers travel credit to the value of their original fare.
Until then, keep your fingers crossed that the clouds clear in time for you to cop a slight winter tan. And for those of you who do the worrying, it’s strongly suggested you try and avoid the temptation to watch Dante’s Peak whilst you’re idly scrolling Netflix in your doona cocoon.
We don’t care how good it is. Just don’t do it.
