You might have braved the lines at places like Gelato Messina or N2 to get your hands on some top quality gelato, but they both just got their arses kicked by another local gelateria, who can now lay claim to not only having the best gelato in the country, but having the best gelato in the world. Cop that, Italy.
Enmore-based Cow and the Moon took out the Gelato World Tour championship – we really hope there’s a belt for it, with expandable waist-line, of course – which took place in Rimini, Italy over the weekend. Following a second placing in the Oceania region last year, Cow and the Moon rose up to take out the global crown in this year’s events.
The delicious, sugary creation that got them over the line was their signature Mandorla Affogato. A pair of words that sounds suspiciously like this.
But no, Colonel Sanders, it’s not the flavour of anger, jealousy and aggression. Rather it’s a merry blend of caramelised almonds from Italy, melded with a single origin coffee on a base of Madagascan vanilla gelato.
We know. We know.

Whilst Gelato Messina and Frangipani Gelato made up the rest of the Australian representation at the event, it was Cow and the Moon that ultimately took out the gold, ahead of a pair of Italians in second place Francesco Mastroianni of Il Cantagalli, and the newly bronzed Alessandro Lancierini of Gelateria Fiore. Say both aloud and feel exceedingly, gloriously European.
Summer’s quickly coming up kids. To hell with Dixie Cups, why not take the chill off with some of the best ice cream in the world? Fancy summer!
