RIP The Opal Card, Which Is No Longer Needed For Sydney Transport

The contactless payment rollout is now complete across the entire Sydney transport network, meaning everyone’s favourite Opal card is no longer necessary.

The rollout began in March last year when contactless payment was implemented on ferries and light-rails, followed by trains later that year in November. The good ol’ bus was the final step, and it’s inclusion in the scheme, NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance notes, “marks the final piece of the contactless payments puzzle.”

This means you can use using a credit card, debit card, smartphone or tablet to tap onto the entire Sydney network. If you hold a Visa, Mastercard or American Express card, as well as a device that links to the card, you’re good to go. If you don’t have a card, no sweat – hold onto your Opal for now.

If you’re a younin and you’re looking to get that concession discount, you’re still going to need your trust Opal card. (It lives on! Love live the youth!)
