Contributor: PEDESTRIAN.TVHaving spent most of 2020 indoors, there’s never been a better time to explore all the stunning and unique landscapes we’ve got on offer in Australia.
Daydream Island (a small island within The Whitsundays with its own vibrant living reef) should be topping your list for domestic travel and adventure right now – I can guarantee you it’s a truly one-of-a-kind location.
Its Living Reef, (a stunning freeform lagoon) is home to more than 100 species of fish and 80 species of coral. The man-made Living Reef plays an important role in conservation, education and eco-conscious tourism in the area. It’s a safe way to snorkel and explore a real, living reef and learn about the delicate reef ecosystems from the marine biologists who run many of Daydream Islands activities.
If you’re in need of a mental reset, any one of these should do the trick.
Take A Yoga Class On The Reef
Yoga is one of the best things you can do to de-stress your mind. A yoga class in front of a stunning living reef? That will take you to a new level of calm. Daydream Island offers yoga classes with the reef as your backdrop, and sunrise stretch classes every morning.
Just being in nature is good for your mental health, so combining this with restorative yoga will leave you feeling energised and fresh.
Feed The Country’s Most Unique Fish
With a recently installed Touch Tank at Daydream Island, you can now take part in a
guided fish-feeding session, letting you see incredible fish, sea stars and even baby reef sharks up close. Fish feeding takes place three times a day, with an extra session during the school holidays and is an exciting, hands-on experience for all ages.
Swim With Stingrays
A highlight for big and little kids alike, the
Stingray Splash experience lets you into the splash pool with Daydream Island’s baby stingrays. After your meet and greet with these graceful creatures, you’ll get a tour of the Underwater Observatory in an experience that is as educational as it is unforgettable.
Snorkel the Living Reef
No trip to The Whitsundays is complete without a snorkelling adventure! This is the best way to see the inhabitants of the reef including the bigger stingrays, reef sharks and fish, guided by one of the island’s dedicated Marine Biologists.
The groups are kept small — a maximum of six people — to ensure the best experience for you with as little disruption for marine life as possible.
Check Out The Underwater Observatory
If you’d rather stay dry, Daydream Island gives everyone a look at life under the sea with an Underwater Observatory that takes you four metres below the surface.
See what the creatures of the reef are up to at any time of day, or time your visit with happy hour drinks and nibbles.
Discover The Reef By Night
Exploring the reef by day is one thing, but by night it is a whole other experience. On Friday nights, the Daydream Island team take small groups on a hands-on tour of the reef, Touch Tanks and Observatory to observe the nocturnal behaviour of the animals.
You can get involved with night feeds of the rays and sharks, too.
