Travel Apps To Make Planning Your Next Holiday Super Easy

I remember hearing years ago that the build-up and planning was one of the most satisfying parts of a holiday because you’re all excited and anticipating getting the hell out of town. So why not take your dang time and stretch that planning bizzo out as far as you can? Of course, you want to actually do it WELL. Otherwise, your fun happy feels will be replaced with stress and confusion as soon as you hit the road. Lucky for all of us there’s an abundance of travel apps these days that make vacay planning easy as.

1. Choice Hotels

Find A Hotel

Ok so we don’t always plan in advance, and sometimes a cheeky little weekend jaunt is as satisfying as a change. So basically you want a one-stop hotel shop that’s going to serve you well whether your planning in advance or need a last minute room. Choice Hotels have their own app that lets you search hotels across the globe, book your room, manage your stay and all with a guarantee of the lowest price, no matter when you’re planning to travel.

2. SkyScanner

Find A Flight

There’s an abundance of flight comparison websites and most have them have a corresponding app. But which is the best? Some you can rule out straight away because they’re really better suited if you’re living in North America. There are a few websites I bounce between: Webjetiwantthatflight and SkyScanner. I find it best to jump across more than one to make sure you’re seeing the best flight options.

However when it comes to apps, I’m giving it to SkyScanner, purely because unlike the other two, it gives you the option of opting in or out of connecting flights over more than one provider. Why does this matter? So that you don’t end up like me, having booked her flight out of Canada a month earlier only to arrive at the airport to find there was no agreement between airlines and I would have to pick up my luggage at the next airport and go through the whole check-in process again, almost certainly making me miss my next flight and face over-staying my visa. 3. IKnowThePilot

If you don’t know exactly when or where you’re going yet, definitely get on the IKnowThePilot app for all the best deals.

4. Couchsurfing

Find A Travel Buddy

It’s a fact of life that trying to organise your group to all go on holiday at the same time can seem damn near impossible. While I’m a STRONG advocate for going it alone (seriously, it will blow your mind, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll impress the hell out of yourself), I get that sometimes you just want guaranteed company. That’s where Couchsurfing comes in.

I know I know, this is your highly anticipated holiday and you don’t want to spend it on someone’s couch. I totally hear you. But after you’ve booked your lush hotel, you can use Couchsurfing to find buddies along your travel route. Plug in your travel itinerary overview, switch from looking for a couch to looking for friends, and boom, new friends. People get reviewed and/or verified on the app too, so it’s pretty easy to feel safe.

5. Uber

Find A Ride

Uber, obviously, still remains one of the best and widely available ride-share apps. But there are a few newcomers on the scene, like Taxify which I’ve found to be slightly cheaper and in my experience has been available in a couple of places where Uber is not.

6. Google Maps

Find A Direction

Anyone who gets lost as much as I do will understand that this is really the most important information you’ll read today. It’s really hard to go past Google Maps. You can download your maps to use even when you’re out of reception. You can save your fave places so you can actually find your way back again. You can get suggestions for places to go. What more could you want?

7. Compare The Market

Find Travel Insurance

Compare The Market is still my go-to for comprehensive insurance comparisons. Plug in your trip deets, see what packages are available and what they cover, all in one place.

8. TripScout

Find Stuff To Do

Sure you could book a tour, or you can find all the cool stuff at your own pace with hints and tips from travel professionals and normal people with TripScout. It’s still a fairly new app but it’s been growing fast to cover more cities the world over so you can create your own mini-tour. You can even add your own notes and discoveries to share with the community. It’s another app that you can download to use offline as well.

9. DuoLingo

Find A Language

Heading abroad? Ok so you’re not going to own a whole new language last minute but your best bet of learning some basics, in my opinion, is DuoLingo. It’s free, it feels like you’re playing a game instead of studying, and you get to work your way through levels as your knowledge grows.

If you’re in need of a more direct translation, I recommend giving Yandex Translate a go. You can download a language dictionary to use offline and it’ll let you type in a word or sentence to have it instantly translated for you.

10. XE Currency

Find A Currency

Even if you’re only popping across the pond to our New Zealand buddies, trying to work out exchange rates are a huge pain in the butt. Unless you’ve already downloaded the XE Currency app that does all the converting for you in multiple currencies at once. I can honestly say there hasn’t been an overseas purchase that didn’t see me consulting this app first.
