Belgium Tourism Pounces On #BrusselsLockdown, Drops Cat-Filled Promo Vid

Belgium‘s had a pretty rough run of it over the last few days. Violence in Paris from the November 13 terror attacks spilled across the border, and while Brussels forces searched the city for suspected ISIS militants, they gave strict instructions to the public not to post any police movements to social media.

Brussels residents obliged the orders, but gave the world a taste of their larrikin nature and instead flooded the #BrusselsLockdown hashtag with cats.

Now, it is in no way near the worst outcome of the terror attacks (that should go without saying), but the violence in Brussels has done a number of their tourism industry, with loads of hotels reporting cancellations.

In response to this, the Visit Flanders Tourism Board (the Flanders being a region of Belgium) have released a surreal but cheeky 20-second ode to Brussels that celebrates the city’s resilient spirit in the face of terror and trying times.
In other words: it has cats. Doing some weird shit.

“The way Brussels and its inhabitants handled the crisis was exemplary and generated worldwide sympathy,” Visit Flanders wrote. “We wanted to show our support to the capital of Belgium. That’s why we let the cat out of the bag during the #BrusselsLockdown.”

And please enjoy this skateboarding cat:
