Look, I don’t consider myself some kind of business genius. I would struggle to successfully own and operate a lemonade stand, and I make zero excuses for that. That being said, however: I think it’s very poor business decision for Tumblr to ban porn, which it just did. Nobody uses Tumblr except horny freaks now. You’re alienating your key demographic.

Tumblr has announced that all pornographic content will be banned from the platform from December 17th, meaning that you have just shy of two weeks to get your fill of erotic GIFs and depraved furry art before they turn off the spigot. According to Tumblr’s blog post, ‘adult content’ includes photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts.”

That’s quite an all-encompassing definition. It’s not entirely surprising that the company has gone down this route. Last month, the Tumblr app was removed from the iOS App Store over a child pornography incident. That being said, banning all porno from Tumblr seems like throwing the baby out with the bathwater, so to speak.

Tumblr has been far more aggressive about filtering and removing content since it moved under the management of Verizon‘s Oath brand. “We’ve given serious thought to who we want to be to our community moving forward,” CEO Jeff D’Onofrio wrote in a blog post. “We’ve realised that in order to continue to fulfil our promise and place in culture, especially as it evolves, we must change.”

This is obviously guaranteed to cause a great deal of consternation among the remaining community on Tumblr. Though, as the company says, there’s a lot of porno on the internet if you’re inclined to find it, the porn community on Tumblr was quite unique, and considered a ‘safe space’ for people to enjoy and discuss adult content in a way that maybe the PornHub comments section can’t facilitate.

It will be interesting to see who is left on Tumblr without the Tumblr porn, if the community kicks up a stink about the ban. Probably like ten guys who love vaporwave GIFs.
