There’s Now A Government Site For Reporting Instances Of Revenge Porn

Revenge porn or any form of image-based abuse is a shitty crime that no one should have to deal with at any point. To help fight it, the Office of the eSafety Commissioner has created an online portal where abuse can be quickly and easily reported.

“We are here to support all Australians who have experienced image-based abuse, by providing reporting options, support and resources for victims, their family and friends, and bystanders,” the site’s landing page reads. Options to report abuse, seek support or get help with legal advice are all clearly presented at the very top.

The site gives valuable information on how to collect evidence, how to report uploaded images to social media or tech companies, and how to get the police involved. There’s also a ton of information around the law of image abuse, like how it differs in each state or territory, as well as how to prepare a legal statement.

If you choose to make a report to the eSafety Commissioner directly, their team will offer you assistance in dealing with the image(s), including facilitation of “effective communication with lawyers or police”.

The site also offers a number of stories of individuals who have experienced image-based abuse, which includes a short video for each.

It’s a promising step in the right direction by the Australian government when it comes to a pretty sensitive topic and one that can be hard to police in the bounds of current law. For someone who isn’t aware of how to deal with the big tech companies that often host these images, it’s a great resource full of important information, but there’s still more to be done on the matter, primarily, changes to current laws.
