Samsung Has Announced A Folding Smartphone With Two Displays & 6 Cameras

Samsung announced a bunch of new products early this morning, and one of them is incredibly impressive. Along with the expected Galaxy S10, the company also unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Fold, which, as the name suggests, folds out from a standard phone into a fully-functioning tablet.

Essentially, you’re getting two devices here. When folded, you can use the 4.6-inch Super AMOLED display like you would a normal smartphone. Send messages, scroll through Instagram, etc. But when the screen is unfolded, it turns the device into a tablet and immediately shifts what you were doing to its larger 7.3-inch Dynamic AMOLED Infinity Flex Display where you’ll not only get a bigger picture, you’ll also get more functionality if the app has been optimised for it.

Take a look at the reveal in the video below.

Impressive, no? You can also have up to 3 apps open on the screen at any one time, allowing you to multitask like a goddamn machine. Incredibly, the Fold packs a system of six cameras – three on the back, two on the inside, and one on the front. To power all of this, the device features two batteries which share the load and are wirelessly chargeable.

The device also comes in a 5G option, as does the Galaxy S10. In terms of the latter, you’re looking at four cameras, an Infinity-O display, and basically your standard upgrade to the Galaxy S9 series.

While the S10 and its variants are expected to start at $1,199 here in Australia, the Fold is set to be way more expensive. Local prices are yet to be revealed, but in the US, it’ll start at $1,980, which converts directly to $2,764, and as always, you can probably expect to tack a little more on top of that, as well.

In other words, you’ll be paying close to $3,000 for one of the worlds first foldable phones. That’s a lot of cash. It’ll come in Cosmos Black, Martian Green, Astro Blue, and Silver.

The S10 is available to pre-order now and will drop on the 8th of March. The Fold, however, will be available in the US from the 29th of April, but no local release date has been confirmed just yet.

The Fold really does feel like an exciting new development for smartphones, and I’m excited to see how it performs when folks start getting the hands on the device.
