Some MacBook Pro Models Have Been Banned From All Commercial US Flights

If you’re heading to the US anytime soon and was hoping to take your tattered old MacBook Pro along for the ride, you might need to think about getting yourself a new one. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has banned certain older models from flying on all commercial flights because they have bung batteries.

Essentially, these are the models Apple issued a voluntary recall on back in June because they’re at risk of overheating. These 15-inch models contain a lithium-ion battery which poses a potential fire risk, which is why the FAA isn’t taking any chances.

As of right now, you can’t take these bad boys on any commercial flights as carry-on or as cargo. You straight-up can’t take them with you in any capacity.

The banned MacBook Pros were sold between September 2015 and February 2017, but those dates have a bit of wriggle room depending on the retailer you got it through. To check for sure, you can jump onto Apple’s recall page and enter your unit’s serial number, which you can get from the ‘About This Mac’ section under the Apple logo at the top left of the screen.

If your laptop is on the bad list, the good news, at least, is that Apple will probably replace the battery for you. Silver linings and all that, you know? If your battery has already been replaced or is safe from the recall, you’ll be told here as well.

If you do need to get a new laptop, you may also be in the market for a new broadband plan, in which case, the ACCC has dubbed TPG as the current front-runner for the best provider of NBN. You can suss some plans below if you’re keen.
