Instagram’s Founders Have Reportedly Resigned From Their Billion Dollar Baby

Instagram’s co-founders have reportedly noped out of the social media juggernaut, eight years after working together to bring the now-ubiquitous photo sharing app into the world.

Citing folks with knowledge of the situation, The New York Times reports Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom have tendered their resignations, and are expected to soon wrap up their day-to-day duties as the company’s CEO and CTO, respectively.

No reason for the reported departure has been outlined. Krieger, Systrom, and Instagram spokespeople have not yet commented on the report.

The apparent shake-up comes after a phenomenal decade for the app, which now boasts more than one billion users. It also comes six years after Instagram’s acquisition by Facebook for roughly $1 billion in cash and Facebook stock, which shot the popular app’s usage through the roof.

But that relationship with Mark Zuckerberg’s world-changing social media platform hasn’t come without some conflict.

Speaking to Bloomberg in April this year, Systrom said there was “tension” between the companies in 2016 when Zuckerberg reportedly asked for Instagram to implement the kind of story-sharing functionality popularised by upstart app Snapchat.

Of course, that move turned out to be massively successful for Instagram, but it also demonstrated a drive for Instagram to deviate from its core functionality. How far Instagram will shift without the leadership of Krieger and Systrom is yet to be seen.
