A Google Cloud Outage Shut Down Gmail & Literally Locked People Out Of Their Homes

Good morning, happy Monday, and welcome to the first day of the working week. Also, Google Cloud has been down for a number of hours.

If you’ve noticed your Gmail stuffing up, the smart lock on your door snapping shut, or had any issues with Google Cloud‘s platform, this probably isn’t news to you: A server outage at Google has hit the world, indirectly impacting other apps like Gmail, YouTube, and Snapchat.

Google has been working to fix the issue (the bare minimum expected) after first acknowledging the problem about three hours ago. Meanwhile, people have been reporting on social media that multiple “smart home” apps that would usually link to the cloud have also been affected.

In what should be seen as a small window into our hellworld, robot-controlled future, some people who have installed “smart home” devices are also suffering, unable to use their thermostats, turn on their air conditioning, or even gain access to their house because they have smart locks installed.

Most of the outages appear to have affected the east coast of the US, but parts of Europe and Australia have also been affected in some way.

Other applications that lean on the Cloud, like Discord, Slack, Spotify, and Vimeo, have also been affected.

Early on Monday morning, Google released a statement confirming that is was experiencing high levels of “network congestion” affecting multiple services.

Users may see slow performance or intermittent errors. Our engineering teams have completed the first phase of their mitigation work and are currently implementing the second phase, after which we expect to return to normal service.

Google will release another update at 9am.
