Facebook Tells Investors To Brace For More Cambridge Analytica-Like Shit

In the wake of the enormous data clusterfuck that was Cambridge Analytica, Facebook has warned its investors that news of more breaches and misuse of personal data by third-party developers should be expected moving forward.

Filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission this week, the document essentially says that Mark Zuckerberg is sticking by his promise to investigate the apps that accessed large portions of data before 2014, but in the process of doing this, will probably unearth even more horrible shit.

“We anticipate that our ongoing investments in safety, security, and content review will identify additional instances of misuse of user data or other undesirable activity by third parties on our platform,” the document reads.

In other words, Facebook doesn’t want its investors to freak out when more data turns up in the hands of dodgy app developers who may have used it in any number of questionable ways, so it’s sending them the warning now, which means the likelihood of it happening is pretty high.

The company also makes it clear that they won’t always be the first to know about these incidents, and that it’ll probably be “the media or other third parties” who make it public. It then lists all the juicy ways the personal data – potentially your data – could have been used.

“Such incidents and activities may include the use of user data in a manner inconsistent with our terms or policies, the existence of false or undesirable user accounts, election interference, improper ad purchases, activities that threaten people’s safety on- or offline, or instances of spamming, scraping, or spreading misinformation.”

The sad thing is that overall, anything else that comes out of this will likely leave Facebook’s share price unchanged in the long term. While plenty of folks are certainly outraged – and rightly so – the general apathy appears too great for anything to change.

As much as Zuckerberg wants you to believe he gives a shit, he really should have given that shit far earlier in the piece, like, oh, I dunno, when he let countless third-party apps scoop up the data of people who were merely friends of those who used them.

Brace yourselves, pals, this Facebook shit storm is only going to get worse before it gets better.
