Devo’d 74-Year-Old Grandpa Farewells His Fave Online Game After 17 Years

Massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPG) are essentially huge virtual worlds in which players create characters and go on mad quests with other players.

Real-world friendships and even romances can be forged within the tangles of this second life, but like a cruel metaphor for our own mortality, no matter how much time and effort you put into it, eventually someone’s going to flick the off switch.
The grandfather in the video below has been playing an MMORPG called Asheron’s Call for a whopping 17 years. Unfortunately for him, the game’s owners are shutting off their servers on the 31st of January 2017, meaning our hero will no longer be able to play his beloved game.
Since its launch in 1999, old mate has made friends across the globe and battled around 80 different characters that he created. Needless to say, he is exceptionally bummed by the news.
His granddaughter, who filmed the video, asked if he would move onto another MMORPG, to which he declined, stating that “everything [else] looks like crap compared to this game”. Well, the guy knows what he wants.
He also talks about the time he came home belted, played some AC and lost a whole heap of his in-game gear.
Farewell, Asheron’s Call grandpa. We hope you find a game just as fulfilling as soon.
