Atari Is Jumping Back Into The Console Game With The Ataribox, But Why?

Atari first announced they were would be releasing a console back in June at E3, leaving the gaming world slightly baffled.

Welp, we still don’t really know what their grand plan is, but we do have some images. The company recently showed off its new console, the Ataribox (really?), in their latest online newsletter. There’s no details on the games it will play or what kind of internal hardware its packing, but it does look pretty sweet.
There will be two versions of the Ataribox: black and red, and wood. They’ll come with an SD card slot, four USB ports and a HDMI output. There’s also an ethernet port on the back and judging by the image, an audio line out, likely for headphones.
The newsletter hints at both classic and current content, but whether it’s going to compete with the big players or simply enter the market as a nostalgia-driven machine like the NES classic is still not certain.
“As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs,” they wrote. “It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content.”

Atari has been around since 1972 and were one of the companies that helped define home gaming. They were the brains behind the classic Pong game and of course, the Atari 2600

Given the lack of details, I wouldn’t expect this to be coming out anytime soon, but we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for updates.
