A New iPod Might Be Coming This Year If You’re Still Living That MP3 Life

If you’re still heaps into iPods for whatever reason, you’ll be stoked to hear that Apple is allegedly working on a new one, according to Macotakara.

While the latest iPod Touch is still very much available, its last iteration was released all the way back in 2015, leaving most Apple fans to turn to streaming services like Spotify or Apple Music. Sources allegedly told Macotakara that Apple may be developing a 7th generation iPod Touch for release in 2019.

It seems like a weird thing for the company to do, but as Gizmodo points out, it could be part of the company’s plan to get more people onto Apple Music via a revamped product. My guess is that a new iPod would essentially function as a physical version of Apple’s streaming service, allowing users to primarily download tracks for offline play rather than buy them outright or transfer from iTunes.

Of course, any iPhone is already capable of doing this, but given the iPod is among Apple’s cheapest products, it could be developed as another avenue into the company for folks who may not be able to afford a smartphone. A 32GB iPod Touch will set you back around $299 in Australia at the moment.

If the rumours are legit, the revamped iPod could be hitting shelves later this year and will probably be announced alongside the range of new iPhones during Apple’s September keynote.
