Apple Confirms It Makes Older Phones Run Like Ass, But Says It’s Necessary

free up space on your iphone

Yesterday, we wrote a yarn about some research conducted by tech nerd, John Poole, which seems to confirm that Apple purposefully throttle the power to older iPhone CPUs. The company have since released a statement confirming this to be true, but dispute the intent behind the act.

To reiterate briefly, old mate Poole compared the performance of the iPhone 6s for each iOS update after 10.2.1 and found that the power supplied to the CPU was dampened each time in order to save the battery. He also surmised that the degrading performance was a ploy to entice users into upgrading to newer hardware. Seems like a reasonable assumption.

Apple has come to the party with a statement confirming it does indeed lessen the power to your CPU with each update, but argues it’s necessary to prevent issues that come with putting updated software onto older devices with degrading battery power. You can read the statement below.

Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices. Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components.

Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions. We’ve now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future.

In other words, their intent isn’t to urge folks to buy new handsets, it’s simply to ensure your iPhone performs the best it can with updated software. At least, that’s what they’re saying. Twitter user @sam_siruomu confirmed that replacing the battery returned the performance to normal.

It’s a bit suss that Apple wasn’t just transparent on the issue in the first place, but here we are. Hopefully, now that this is all out in the open, the company can offer reasonably priced replacement batteries.
