‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ Notches Biggest Opening Weekend Ever Recorded

If your housemate has gone missing for the past five days, it’s likely because of Red Dead Redemption 2, the cowboy game which has absolutely annihilated the free time of gamers across the planet since its release.

Now, the initial sales figures have rolled in, and boy howdy: it seems basically everyone with access to an Xbox One or PlayStation 4 picked up a copy of the Rockstar Games epic, because the company has reported opening sales of over AUD $1 billion in three days.

IGN reports Red Dead Redemption 2 had the highest opening weekend earnings of any entertainment property in the history of ever, eclipsing every single movie, album, or other artwork ever crafted by human hands.

The only thing standing in the way of Red Dead Redemption 2 earning the biggest opening ever, as opposed to biggest opening weekend, is Rockstar Games’ own Grand Theft Auto V. That masterpiece was released on a Tuesday back in September 2013, and earned well over AUD $1.4 billion in its first three days.

Support for the game has hardly been all hype, either. The open-world Wild West behemoth has been praised across the board for its gripping storytelling, incredible craftmanship, and loose gameplay.

Folks, you can hogtie bandits, place them on train tracks, loot them, steal a train, and then run ’em over. That’s worth a billy alone, tbh.

Expect the game to continue amassing praise and dollars in the weeks, months, and years to come – especially when it gets a PC release. Yeehaw.
