Nintendo Says Once The NES & SNES Classics Sell Out They’re Gone Forever

During an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Nintendo of America boss, Reggie Fils-Aime, has confirmed the company will not be making any more NES or SNES Classics. Once they’ve sold out, that’s all there is, folks.

“These products are going to be available through the holiday season and once they sell out, they’re gone. And that’s it,” he said. In other words, if you haven’t already got one and you want one, get in quick.

That doesn’t mean Nintendo is no longer revisiting its catalogue of retro games, though. Reggie went on to recommend that fans sign up for Nintendo Switch Online, as it’s now the “main way that consumers will be able to experience that legacy content.”

Since its launch, the company’s online service has been gradually releasing retro NES titles for the Switch, on top of the 20 or so it had to begin with. By the sounds of it, these will continue to roll out over time. From a business perspective, it makes a lot of sense to charge a subscription to play these games rather than dish out more physical consoles.

Hopefully, Nintendo extends its legacy content to SNES and maybe even Nintendo 64 titles. It’s already confirmed that an N64 classic isn’t even on its radar at the moment, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get some Switch action, right?
