Motorola Is Bringing Back The RAZR Next Year Because 2005 Will Never Truly Die

Picture this, mates. It’s late 2005. Panic! At The Disco has just released A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, which you’ve been giving an absolute thrashing on your Sony Discman which has 10 seconds of anti-skip shock protection. Your crush who lives in Canada who you’ve never met but have spent approximately 1,200 hours talking to on MSN has just put you into their Top 8 on MySpace. And on TV, Andrew G and James Matheson want you to SMS “LEE” to 19 10 10 to save your favourite ever Australian Idol contestant, after he just tore through a punked-up cover of Roxanne at about 300 beats per minute. You can’t do that, though, because your parents are assholes who haven’t let you have a mobile phone yet. But there’s a suspiciously sized box sitting under the Christmas Tree that leads you to believe you’re about to receive the greatest gift of all: The Motorola RAZR.

The original and the must-have flip phone was a cornerstone of technology in the early 2000s, and while the intervening years have been decidedly RAZR-less thanks to the ever-changing face of phone tech, 2020 is set to be a roaring blast from the past, with Motorola announcing that not only are they bringing the RAZR back, but it’s in an updated version that honestly looks like giving its flat-screen compatriots a run for their money.

The RAZR 2019, reportedly the actual name of the new model despite the fact its not due to drop until 2020, was unveiled by the tech giant overnight, and the specs have got folks positively buzzing.

Taking some inspiration from its OG predecessor, the new RAZR is, essentially, a foldable smart phone with a front-facing screen.

The entirely touch-screen smartphone folds down to half its size in idle mode, but features a 2.7″ quick view screen that displays vital information like the time, incoming caller ID, and push notifications.

Inside, the phone sports 6.2″ OLED screen which, again, folds neatly in half for more compact storage.

The frame of the phone even retains the classic RAZR chin, which helps the foldable display sit flush with the rest of the dang thing.

Will it be any good? Hard to say, really. If there’s any goddamned justice in this work-a-day world the phones will come pre-loaded with with a LiveJournal app and a copy of Dope Wars.

Either way, might be time to fish out that old discman and shove some fresh AAs into it. 2020’s gonna be a time.
