Nintendo Will Work With The Studio Behind ‘Minions’ On Upcoming Mario Movie

It’s been a huge 24 hours for Nintendo announcements. Alongside the news of a Mario Kart mobile game, the company has also confirmed it will be working with Illumination – the studio behind ‘Despicable Me‘ and ‘Minions‘ – on the Mario movie.

Making the announcement via Twitter, Nintendo says the movie will be co-produced by the Mario inventor himself, Shigeru Miyamoto, alongside Illumination CEO, Chris Meledandri.

It’s comforting to know Miyamoto will have a firm grip on the project, so hopefully we don’t end up with something as bad as the Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993. Of course, we’re not dealing with a live action film this time around, so that’s a start.

What a time.

The project is being co-financed by Nintendo and Universal Pictures, with the later handling the film’s worldwide distribution. It’s still really early days at this point, so there’s no release date or window getting around just yet.

The past 12 months have been a whirlwind for Nintendo, who broke sales records with the Switch and its incredible lineup of first-party games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

I can’t help but feel worried anytime a movie based on a video game is announced, given the track record of such projects (the Doom movie damn near killed me), but Nintendo and Illumination seem like such a good pairing, so I’m hopeful.

Fingers crossed they can pull this one off.
