While the iPhone 8 is essentially a 7s, one of the biggest physical changes to the device is its all-glass back. Of course, they claim it’s the strongest glass they’ve ever used, but let’s be real, you’re still going to break it when you’re written off.
Now, you’d think a sheet of glass on the back would be cheaper, if not, the same cost to repair as the glass screen, right? Nope, it’s fucking more through AppleCare+.
As AppleInsider confirmed, damage to the back of the device qualifies as “other damage”, which hits with a harder service fee of $149, as opposed to the screen repair fee of $45. You’ll only get it at that price twice, after which you’ll be slugged the full cost of the repairs.
That’s not even including the cost of AppleCare+ itself, which will set you back $189 for the iPhone 8 and $229 for the iPhone 8 Plus. If you’re holding out for the iPhone X, get ready to pay an extra $299 for the insurance product.
If you take away anything from this story, it should be that you’re better off shelling out for a sturdy case rather than an expensive insurance plan.
