‘Fresh Prince’ Actor Alfonso Ribeiro Becomes The Latest To Sue ‘Fortnite’

Alfonso Ribeiro, the bloke who played Carlton Banks on the classic sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, has become the latest person to sue Fortnite creator, Epic Games, over stolen dance moves.

The filing claims that the Fresh emote in Fortnite is a direct copy of that one dance Carlton does in Fresh Prince, TMZ reports. The actor’s attorney says Epic did not ask for permission to use the dance, nor did it pass on compensation for selling the emote, which it does with most of them.

Ribeiro has also filed a second lawsuit against the creators of NBA 2K2K Games, for the same reason.

This certainly isn’t the first time an actor has taken aim at Epic for jacking a dance. Rapper, 2 Milly, recently filed a lawsuit against the company for using his Milly Rock dance as an emote. Scrubs actor, Donald Faison, also called out the Fortnite creator for using his Poison dance, but there’s no word on whether legal action is being taken in his case.

As Polygon pointed out previously, it’s a little bit of a legal grey area, as it’s impossible to patent singular dance moves, just as singular words can’t be patented. Choreographed routines, however, can, so it’ll be interesting to see what the court rules in both of these cases.
