There are plenty of horror stories out there involving webcams and unauthorised access from full-blown perverts. It’s certainly become a sad reality that owning a computer comes with the probability that your data or camera may be compromised by jerks at some point.
You may have even seen the recent picture of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s MacBook Pro, which had a piece of tape stuck over the webcam. Maybe it’s a little paranoid, but if I were Mark, I certainly wouldn’t want hackers stealing questionable pictures of me that could be used for blackmail. Fuck. That.
Many, many people would have followed suit after seeing the above, but if you needed any more convincing, here it is – FBI director James Comey said that you should sure as hell cover the shit outta your webcam in an interview at the recent Centre for Strategic and International Studies conference.
“Heck yeah, heck yeah,” he said.
“You go into any government office, we all have our little camera things that sit on top of the screen.”
They all have a little lid that closes down on them. You do that so that people who don’t have authority don’t look at you. I think that’s a good thing.”
There you have it folks, don’t let creepers see ya in the nude. Cover your cams.
