Facebook Is Bringing Back Chat Rooms So Tell Mum To Hang Up The Phone

Facebook has taken another step on the path to becoming the internet’s one-stop shop by launching a chat room feature.

Yep, they’ve reinstated an element of Web 2.0 we thought social media was meant to render extinct, and the unrepentant forum-stalkers in us are kinda intrigued.

Named Rooms, aptly enough, the feature has popped up in Australia before the monolithic online mainstay rolls it out worldwide.

It’s tacked on to the Messenger app, and it operates in much the same way as group chats do, except Rooms allow you to mingle with strangers regarding any topic of your choosing.

So, uh, yeah. Chat rooms, without the endless reams of BBCode. Think an untested homunculus of Reddit and 4Chan with less grossness, and you’re halfway there.

Aussie Android users are serving as Rooms’ guinea pigs before FB rolls the feature out worldwide, and look, we’ve wasted no time creating chats for the topics that really matter.

Rooms also seems to provide an outlet for the discussion of fine cinema that may get lost in the detritus of a public Facebook page.
This development comes after the grand reveal of Facebook Marketplace, and likely just before the monolithic blue-and-white F announces it has actually become a fully-fledged nation-state.
