EA Is So Horny For Battle Royale It’s Contemplating Its Own ‘Fortnite’ Killer

Battle Royale fever has had the gaming world in a fucking frenzy over the past year or so, and now one of the biggest players in the industry wants to give it a go for themselves. Battlefield publisher, EA, has expressed interest in creating its own free-to-play title similar to Fortnite.

If you think back to earlier this year, you’ll remember that EA is indeed including a Battle Royale mode in the upcoming Battlefield V. We still haven’t seen any footage of the particular mode yet, so it’s going to be interesting to see how the team approaches the feature.

While you’d be forgiven for mistaking this as the company’s only intentions for Battle Royale, CFO Blake Jorgensen revealed during an investor call today that EA could very well release a standalone title for the genre that would be free-to-play. We’re not just talking a separate version of Battlefield, either, it would likely be something completely different.

“We’re interested in experimenting with a free-to-play standalone game that might be in a shooter genre or another genre,” Jorgensen said when questioned about the company’s intentions for a Battle Royale title. “But I don’t think that’s how we’re looking at the Battlefield stuff right now.”

It’s no surprise that EA wanna stick its enormous fingers in the Battle Royale pie given the roaring success of games like PUBG and more recently, Fortnite. Hopefully, they tackle it in a different way to keep the genre fresh and exciting.

When the company announced Battlefield V’s take on the genre, CEO Andrew Wilson said it was “clearly a mode of play that the global FPS population is interested in.”

It’s not the first company to express interest in the game mode, either, with Activision announcing their own take on the mode which will feature in the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. While we’ve seen a bit of a teaser for that, we still don’t know exactly how it’s going to work.

In the meantime, Battlefield V drops in October for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
