This ‘Doom’ Mod Turns The Game Into An Extremely Pleasant Experience

As one of the most important first-person shooters ever created, the original Doom is still loved and played by tons of people, particularly those in the modding community.

Folks have been modding the game for years, whether it’s to add modern gameplay mechanics, enhance the level of violence, or create brand new games from its bones. As Kotaku points out, one of its latest mods turns the classic shooter into one of the most pleasant gaming experiences of all time.

It’s called Mr. Friendly and rather than tasking you with shooting demons into oblivion, it has you conversing and completing tasks for them instead. While the harsh aesthetics of Mars are largely unchanged, props and enemies have been given completely new characteristics and names.

For example, a pile of guts on the floor is now called “stashed soup”, which is just sensational. Each monster now has its own name and will have a lovely chat to you rather than trying to rip your face clean off. Oh, and you can fly now, too, that’s pretty different.

You can also go fishing in the weird green sludge that used to kill you in the original game. Suss out developer JP LeBreton‘s video below for more details and gameplay footage.

You can get Mr. Friendly for free right now on Itch.io. Being familiar with how to mod Doom will help, but there’s some installation instructions on the site.
