Netflix Is Turning ‘Cuphead’ Into A Heaps Easier To Finish Animated Series

Cuphead animated series.

As a big fan of 1920s and 30s Fleischer Studio animation but a terrible video game player, Cuphead put me in a difficult position. I loved the music, I loved the art, I loved the concept as a whole, but the extreme level to which I suck ass at playing any game that involves reacting quickly or hand-eye coordination meant that I spent most of my time just getting my ass kicked and crying, like a child would.

Luckily, someone has engineered a solution seemingly specifically for me personally, with Netflix announcing an upcoming Cuphead animated series. The show will be one of the first original animation projects to come out of King Features, the company responsible for syndicating just about every comic strip you’ve ever seen in a newspaper. As the company that licenses the iconic characters like Betty Boop and Felix the Cat whose early animated appearances inspired Cuphead, they seem in a pretty good position to do something interesting with the show.

The Cuphead Show will feature the same animation style as the video game and, as described by Netflix, will be a character-driven comedy that follows “the impulsive Cuphead and his cautious but easily swayed brother Mugman” in “their many misadventures across their surreal home of the Inkwell Isles”.

It’s unclear how many episodes we’re looking at or when it will come out, but we do know that Cuphead creators Chad and Jared Moldenhauer will serve as executive producers, alongside CJ Kettler from King Features.

Cuphead came to the Switch back in April, if you feel like infuriating yourself with an absolutely gorgeously designed game (and it’s also available on macOS, Windows, and Xbox, if you would like to infuriate yourself in a slightly different fashion). For now, I will leave you with this absolutely bonkers piece of 1930s animation, which feels like if Adventure Time was black and white, crazier, and had jazz legend Cab Calloway in it:
