RED ALERT: EA Announce It’s Remastering The ‘Command & Conquer’ Series

If you were a PC gamer growing up in the early 2000s, you’ll no doubt remember the Command & Conquer series, particularly its most popular title, Red Alert 2. After a fairly woeful attempt at a mobile game, EA has announced that it’s already begun work on a PC remaster of the franchise.

As pointed out by Kotaku, the announcement was quietly made via posts on the Command & Conquer subreddit and OpenRA page, which makes sense given both pages represent a decent portion of the series’ fanbase. While the subreddit kinda speaks for itself, OpenRA is an open source, fan-powered project which aims to bring classic RTS titles into the modern age.

To celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary, EA producer, Jim Vessella, says the team has listened to community feedback and is keen to deliver the goods.

“Following the reveal of Rivals, we heard you loud and clear: the Command & Conquer community also wants to see the franchise return to PC,” he wrote. “And as a fan of C&C for over 20 years, I couldn’t agree more. With that in mind we’ve been exploring some exciting ideas regarding remastering the classic PC games, and already have the ball rolling on our first effort to celebrate the upcoming 25th Year Anniversary.”

No one knows which of the titles they’re currently working on, but I’d wager it’d be one of the more popular ones, like Red Alert 2, Tiberian Sun, or Generals. Don’t expect it anytime soon, though, the 25th anniversary doesn’t hit until 2020, so it’s safe to say they still have a long way to go in terms of development.

Check out some RA2 gameplay below and have some wild flashbacks. I forgot how sick the soundtrack was, too.

You won’t have to worry about any added microtransactions, either. Jim checked in a number of times to make sure the community understood that point loud and clear.

“Hi everyone, I was hanging out in the Discord and Forums but wanted to post here too,” he said. “I just wanted to re-confirm there will not be any micro-transactions in a C&C Remaster.”

As an enormous fan of the C&C series, I can’t wait to see what the team does with the games and how many of them will make a remastered appearance. I plan on reliving the old LANs of my teen years and their three-hour long RA2 skirmishes. Those were the days.
