Apple Arcade Is A Netflix-Like Subscription Service But For iPhone Games

Along with its news and TV subscription services, Apple also announced a similar platform exclusively for gaming. Unveiled early this morning, Apple Arcade will cater to all of the company’s devices, whether it’s iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, or Mac.

There’s no hard release date for it just yet, but the subscription is set to launch with more than 100 exclusive games later this year. Similar to Apple’s News+ and TV+ services, Arcade will offer an all-you-can-eat buffet of games for a single monthly subscription fee.

It’ll include titles from studios like Konami, Lego, Giant Squid, Finji, Bossa Studios, Mistwalker Corporation, Klei Entertainment, Cartoon Network, and more. Instead of creating a whole new app for the service, Arcade will simply be a new tab on the App Store across iOS, macOS, and tvOS.

All games will be playable offline and available in more than 150 countries, including here in Australia, of course. On launch, it’ll offer new titles from folks like Will Wright, the creator of The Sims, the Aussie studio behind Florence, known as Mountains, and the maker of Final Fantasy, Hironobu Sakaguchi.

How Apple Arcade will be priced is unknown at this stage both locally and internationally, but more is expected to be revealed before its launch later this year in our spring. If you’re keen to see the reveal for yourself, you can have a watch of the opening sequence in the video below.
