Apple Admits It Bunged The Mac Pro & Is Building A Totally Reworked One

The current Mac Pro is a powerful computer, but let’s not kid ourselves, it looks like an Aldi coffee machine.

Aesthetics aside, it’s heinously pricey for the average consumer, many of whom would struggle to justify owning such a beefy computer. For creatives, on the other hand, it’s a dream machine.
It wasn’t without controversy, either. The 2013 design copped a lot of criticism, with Apple‘s SVP of software engineering even admitting the bung move.

“We designed ourselves into a bit of a corner,” he said. “We wanted to do something bold and different. What we didn’t appreciate completely at the time was how we had so tailored that design to a specific vision that in the future we would find ourselves a bit boxed in — into a circular shape.”
Five years later, Apple have low-key announced that they’re working on a new, completely overhauled Mac Pro via Apple obsessive and writer, John Gruber
“Apple is currently hard at work on a “completely rethought” Mac Pro, with a modular design that can accommodate high-end CPUs and big honking hot-running GPUs, and which should make it easier for Apple to update with new components on a regular basis.”

There’s no way you could fit a “big honking” GPU into the current model, so my guess is they’re heading back to a more conventional unit that can be easily upgraded, rather than having to be replaced when it inevitably becomes obsolete.
So when is it coming? Not anytime soon, Gruber reckons. This is simply an announcement likely made to bait Mac Pro fans into staying with the brand rather than heading over to the PC market.
Freedom of upgrade is something that PC nerds, such as myself, hold over the all-in-one ethos that Apple have valued for so long. Sure, they’ve nailed the laptop market, but their desktops continue to lack wider appeal, playing almost exclusively to the professional creative.
There is, however, a gap in the market for easy upgradability, which neither PC or Mac have managed to gain a grasp on. My guess is that Apple are gunning for this space with their new line of high end desktops, but realistically, it’s anyone’s guess at this stage.
Until I can reliably shoot the living fuck out of my friends in a game of my choosing, I’ll stick to PC, hey.
