‘Angry Birds’ Is Copping A Hardcore eSports Reboot With Legit Cash Prizes

Remember when Angry Birds was the shit-hot mobile game? Everybody loved it, and I’m sure some folks still do, but it kinda disappeared from the limelight for a little while there.

Well now it’s back, friends, and this time it’s making a play for competitive gaming. Forget Counter-Strike or League of Legends, competitive Angry Birds could be your new eSport of choice.

If, for whatever reason, you have no idea what I’m talking about, the game involves flinging a number of stroppy avian characters at an army of fortified pigs with a slingshot. It’s a simple formula that makes for a fun time.

The upcoming version with a competitive spin is called Angry Birds Champions and will offer up cash prizes to winners, but probably not as much as you’re thinking.

While there’ll be a free game mode available, you’ll have to pay a $1 fee if you wanna compete for a prize. If you win, you’ll be the proud recipient of around 4 bucks. Lucky you.

You’ll be able to compete for free if you prefer, but you won’t get any money if you win.

Angry Birds Champions is currently in development with the game’s original creator, Rovio Entertainment, in conjunction with WorldWinner, who is best known for cash prize tournament-based desktop titles like Tetris Burst and Bejeweled.

Rather than getting a brand new Angry Birds app, it’ll use the WorldWinner app, which is only available for iOS right now.

“Our core focus has been iOS. We have not created an Android-based app, which obviously makes us unavailable to a large proportion of mobile gamers,” SVP and general manager of Skill Games at WorldWinner, Jeremy Shea, told Games Industry.

“We wanted to look for the best-in-class mobile games that have already been released. And obviously Angry Birds came to the top of that list.”

All those years flinging birds across your screen might finally pay off, folks. And by pay off, I mean you might be able to buy an extra coffee or something.
