Zambesi’s Pre-MBFWA 2013 Questionnaire

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, or MBFWA [pronounced like MMMBop: ‘MMMBfwa!’] starts tomorrow, but chances are if you have any interest in the industry or the week-long event you already know that. What you may not know is that New Zealanders Zambesi, a label with a heritage as long as the long white storm cloud itself, are making a welcome return to the official schedule in an eagerly anticipated addition to both the womenswear and menswear components and life in general; or that if their collection was a song it’d be, appropriately and perfectly enough down to the last measurement, Nick Cave’s ‘We Real Cool‘.

Read on for more from Zambesi’s menswear designer Dayne Johnston, one half of the design duo closing the week with a welcome return to these shores for the first time since 2010. You’ll be able to stream live the Zambesi show too via Jasu or in situ at Martin Place on Friday at 2pm.

1. Without giving too much away who or what has been the muse/s for your Fashion Week collection?

The initial inspiration for the men’s collection was a vintage leather motorcycle suit.

2. If your new collection could be summed up in a song what would it be?

Nick Cave ‘We Real Cool’.

3. In what way is this collection different to anything you’ve done before?

The experimentation of using dark indigo stretch denim.

4. Describe the state of your studio right now with a week left before MBFWA?

Creative chaos!

5. What are your 3 must-have items for surviving MBFWA and the lead up?

Shuffle iPod, mini iPad & multivitamins.

6. Who is your favourite Aus model/s to work with and why?

I’m excited to work with the high standard of Australian male models, many of whom have international acclaim. I’m especially looking forward to meeting Angus Low who has walked for some of my favourite designers.
