Hold onto your stomachs: footage of great white shark getting into and then jumping out of a cage is going viral.
The video was posted yesterday on social media by – *inhales deeply* – the dad of a couple of social media famous kids. The kids are called ‘Gabe and Garrett‘, and from what I can gather they post videos of them riding toy cars. Let’s all move on from that, okay?
So yeah, the footage was taken by their dad, who until he replies and tells us his real name we’ll be calling Daddy GG.
“The diver is a very experienced dive master, remained calm, and when the shark thrashed back outside the cage, the diver calmly swam back up and climbed out completely uninjured,” he wrote.
Daddy GG said that while it appears to be aggressive as hell shark bent on devouring human flesh, it was actually a lot more innocent than that.
“What might appear to be an aggressive great white shark trying to attack the cage, this is not the case,” he wrote. “These awesome sharks are biting at large chunks of tuna tied to a rope. When a great white shark lunges and bites something, it is temporarily blinded. They also cannot swim backwards. So this shark lunged at the bait, accidentally hit the side of the cage, was most likely confused and not able to swim backwards, it thrust forward and broke the metal rail of the cage.”
He praised the boat crew for analysing the “frenzied situation” and lifting the top of the cage, ensuring the sharks made their way out.
“Everyone on the boat returned to the cages the next day, realising this was a very rare event,” he said. “The boat owner, captain, and crew are to be commended for making what could’ve been a tragic event into a happy ending.”
