WATCH: 2 Gals Give World’s Hottest Chilli A Crack, Destroy Their Own Lives

Right, here’s the thing with chillies: you can essentially do away with Scoville Units*, the actual measurement of how “hot” a chilli is, if you use just a little bit of common sense.

Does every burger joint on planet Earth offer jalapeños as their “spicy” option? Right, they might be a bit tangy, but it’s not in a restaurant’s interests to dissolve your insides.

What about those angry-lookin’ yellow fuckers your uncle grows on his patio? Well, the man only uses ’em as thinly-sliced garnish, so don’t go wolfing them down.

As for the chillies like the Moruga Scorpion, Bhut Jolokia and the Carolina Reaper? The names alone should act as a deterrent, but the fact they are specially-grown to be legitimate goddamn chemical weapons should scare anyone but the most serious of sado-masochists away.

New Jersey buds Lizzy Wurst and Sabrina Stewart apparently breezed past all of those warning signs and a video, showing their failed attempt to eat Carolina Reapers, was posted at the start of the month. Like the peppers in question, the video’s intensity (and virality) only increases with the passage of time:

While we’ve never experienced the oral blitzkrieg one of those chillies would dole out, it is worth noting the use of water might’ve paradoxically made things much, much worse. Capsaicin, the chemical that makes them shits so spicy, is insoluble in water. Swishing around with anything other than milk or booze probably just spread the heat around, which may have lead to Stewart’s horrific asthma attack.

Wurst told The Daily Mail she ended up with legitimate blisters in her mouth from the ordeal, saying “I could’ve really gotten hurt and I’m thankful I didn’t. This is too extreme for anyone to try.” Despite getting hitched up to an oxygen machine, Stewart ended up okay, too – but not after some copious spewing.

Might stick to sriracha for a little while, hey?

*Jalapeños clock in at about 2,500 Scoville units. Carolina Reapers? 2.2 million.
