Victoria Beckham’s New Campaign Is Being Slammed Over “Sickly Skinny” Model

Fashion designer Victoria Beckham is getting absolutely roasted online for her choice of model in recent campaign imagery.

The campaign imagery – for her 2018 Spring/Summer eyewear collection – was posted to her Facebook page, and has racked up comments upon comments from angry followers who claim the model – Giedre Dukauskaite – is an unhealthy weight.

“Eyes didn’t even notice the glasses. The model was the focus. Sickly skinny! Beckham should be ashamed promoting eating disorders. Her young daughter is heavier than her models. Shame,” Facebook user Elena Mata Westerman wrote under the post.

“Please be responsible to impressionable aspects of your audience and use models who look healthy. Whether she’s actually healthy is not really the issue. It’s the perception that she’s far too skinny for her frame but has nonetheless managed to secure such a prestigious modelling campaign that is the concerning factor here. There will be lots of girls and boys looking at this and sadly seeing skinny = successful,” wrote Claire E Lloyd.

The backlash is particularly bad for Victoria, as she’s been quite vocal during her career about avoiding the inclusion of “terribly thin” models in her shows. In 2010, she became involved in Beauty Is Health, a campaign by the Council Of Fashion Designers of America which involves designers pledging to ban extremely thin models from their shows.

In fairness to the Victoria Beckham brand and to Giedre, the outfit may have come into play here. For example, here’s a pic from Giedre’s Instagram account.

Some users aren’t so much critiquing Giedre herself, rather the overall look the imagery promotes.

“Beautiful clothing, but the perspective looks very wrong making the model look far too slim, therefore making the clothing appear unwearable for most women,” wrote Wendy Calvert.

Victoria is yet to make a statement on the backlash.
