Uni Student Dupes Thirsty Tinder Matches Into Transferring Her $5 For Nada

The latest and greatest (read: worst) Tinder scam doesn’t involve an intricate system of dummy profiles and bot accounts – just some devious scheming and an endless stream of fellas whose critical thinking skills are temporarily overridden by thirsty curiosity.

Images posted to Twitter by 20-year-old Tinder user Maggie Archer outline the ruse, and suggest she’s made at least $35 from unsuspecting victims:

YUP.

Ol’ mate Mags accompanied those images with the claim that it’s “the best possible use for Tinder.”
TBH, if you measure how good a dating app is by assessing how much dosh you can scam from unwitting lonely boys, Archer might be right – she estimates that one in five matches who ask about the bio end up sending money along.
Naturally, the screenshots of this deceivingly simple (and simply deceiving) swindle have gone viral. In less than a week, it’s been retweeted over 8,000 times, and there’s a fairly decent chance you may have actually seen her Paypal-baiting trick replicated by other Tinder users.
Not everyone has been as lucky in their nefarious endeavours as Archer. Other users have revealed they’ve already been kicked off the platform for attempting to emulate the scam.

While it’s an objectively shady system and you shouldn’t be using the app to work pocket money out of the innocent, it’s worth noting it doesn’t technically lie to users who feel like parting with $5: they want to “see what happens,” it’s just that what “happens” is a swift unmatching.

That still doesn’t stop the scam from violating Tinder’s T&Cs, which state “content” that “requests money from, or is intended to defraud, other users of the Service” is explicitly banned.

With that in mind, to everyone who feels compelled to sneak some immoral beer money out of the dating app: see what happens*.
