Despite the fact that erosion is a completely understood, very unmysterious physical process, there’s something truly magnificent and terrifying about sinkholes – the Earth spontaneously opening up is some damn evocative imagery. Also “sinkhole” is just a funny word to me.

It turns out the internet agrees, seeing as Twitter directed their collective talents to roasting the Prime Minister over his fresh new hole (lol) like a supervillain directing an orbital laser at a children’s hospital:
