TIME Annoints Instagram Photographer Of The Year For North Korean Photo Diary

Bow down, instagrammers. TIME has announced their pick for instagram photographer of the year and it is seven-time World Press Photo Award winner David Guttenfelder, who definitely has better instagram game than you. Guttenfelder’s account throughout 2013 has featured a series of photos from within North Korea, after the world renowned veteran photojournalist was granted rare access to the notoriously camera shy dictator nest nation.

The pictures, whilst devoid of anything the ‘government minder’ assigned to him thought might be compromising, are still completely fascinating and could be ripped stills of ‘North Korea: a Wes Anderson film‘. Guttenfelder said of the series: “Nobody knows anything about [North Korea] and what it looks like…I feel like there’s a big opportunity and a big responsibility.” Speaking of his experience studying Anthropology in uni he felt that, while North Korea “is not the kind of place where you can make what photojournalists call good pictures very easily”, the “artifacts” he brought back meant the photo series was “really more about the sum of all the parts. When you add up all the pieces something interesting starts to emerge.”
