‘The Great Gatsby’ Premiere: Red Carpet

Before Baz Luhrmann‘s anxiously awaited adaptation of The Great Gatsby hits US cinemas (after which it will open the Cannes Film Festival), its secretive world premiere was held at the Lincoln Centre in New York City last night where a sharply dressed congregation descended upon the red carpet before signing non-disclosure agreements and hitting the theatre. We have absolutely no idea what the eminent guests thought of the movie, but at least we know what they were wearing (because we looked at the following pictures).

Baz and his lady wife Catherine Martin were nicely turned out in matching tones of the sea. He opted for a chic blue Prada tuxedo with black racing stripes and she embraced the decadent embellishment of the Gatsby era with a dress and coat covered in artful crochet-like beading that draped past her hemline. The amazing shoes, I believe, are Prada.

Leo gives great suit. This two-buttoned Prada cut is ultra sharp, although I wish I could say the same about his face which he has unfortunately decided to mar with that godawful facial hair he likes so much.

Ta da! says Martha Stewart showing zero shame about her gold knit pedal pushers. And why would she? Bitch basically owns the Hamptons.

OMAR!?! What the heck are you doing here boy! Love the shoes, the shirt colour is courageous, the tie/s are confusing and your friend is ENORMOUS.

Joel Edgerton looks movie star levels of daytime chic in that grey Ermenegildo Zegna suit and his spectacular woman Alexis Blake.

Florence Welch wears a floor-length Miu Miu gown fresh from the Fall 2013 runway which could probably lose the necktie. The shoes are fabulous as is her daring homage to 2011 breakout pose, the awkward lean.

And now from behind:

Here is Tobey Maguire and his wife Jennifer Meyer wearing outfits in matching Saint Laurent. The couple that wears high fashion together stays together, or something. They are so unassumingly sweet that I want to see the inside of their house just to see what a perfect life looks like.

Ew. I hate it went television people turn up to movie things.

Ditto above for Nina Dobrev in her look-everyone-it’s-Art-Deco-because-The-Great-Gatsby Versace dress.

The immensely talented Australian actress/playwright Kate Mulvaney (who plays Mrs McKee in the movie) is gorgeous in red lace Collette Dinnigan and well-executed coiffure.

Angelica Anjelica Houston is such a hoot. Only a true genius can wear flesh-coloured pantyhose with open-toe shoes (let alone with ANY type of shoe) and get away with it, particularly with unnecessary sunglasses and a wry smile. Goddess.

Love the dark wool three-piece suit on Australian actor Callan McAuliffe who plays the young Jay Gatsby. I also love the fact he appears to have been born with one eyebrow raised jauntily above the other.

… or maybe he’s just affecting it?

… No, it seems to be permanent.

This Dolce & Gabbana frock of sheer garden party at the top and appliqued black lace on the bottom is a gorgeous choice for Isla Fisher.

Carrie Carey Mulligan is a perfect, tiny breakable-looking thing in Lanvin with Brian Atwood heels. [Thank you to commenter Tess for the spelling correction on Carey’s name. I knew that didn’t look right but on a Friday afternoon it’s like “Google who?“]

HO HO! IT’S CHANEL, DAHLINGS.

Andre Leon Talley wears a repulsive gold Snuggie that appears to have been hoisted from the Game Of Thrones costume department for the ancient port city of Qarth. Genius…
