Romance Was Born On David Jones & New Collabs

Announcing the addition of Romance Was Born to their already impressive stable of local designers (including Dion Lee, Willow and Josh Goot) couldn’t have come at a better time for David Jones, who have been in need of positive messages to feed their stakeholders. Not only a major coup for the department store, the chance for Romance Was Born designers Luke Sales and Anna Plunkett to expand their business and gain greater exposure for their brand was an opportunity they embraced.

Luke answered a few of our questions about the freshly inked David Jones deal as well as some other exciting RWB collaborations…

How does it feel to have Romance Was Born signed up with David Jones? Its great! David Jones is our department store of preference and I feel like it’s come at a point in our career where people know us well enough now to know it won’t defuse our label or what we are on about. It’s also nice as it validates in many ways that we are actually making clothing that people will wear, not “crazy” shit no one gets….not that it is.

What is it about the DJs womenswear collection that appealed to you and the label? I think DJs represents a very diverse range of design – being a department store and all, so i think there is something that would appeal to everyone; they have spent a lot of time securing a great stable of Australian designers and we’re proud to be one of them.

What kind of opportunities does signing to a bit department store provide an independent label like RWB? While we are and always will be a boutique label I think it’s great to introduce our name to a new audience and a different customer who wouldn’t normally shop – or be too scared even to go to – the boutiques we sell in.

Does Romance Was Born have any other collaborations in the pipeline? We are working with Melbourne artist Kate Rhode again for winter and another Melbourne painter Stephen Giblett.

Romance Was Born will be available in David Jones Sydney and Melbourne city stores from September.
