RIP Fashion Photographer Richard Bailey

Australian fashion photographer Richard Bailey has sadly passed away at 52 after losing his battle with cancer. Bailey’s longstanding relationship with Vogue Australia – who he first worked with at age 21 – saw him shooting iconic celebrity covers featuring Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Miranda Kerr. Bailey was also hugely prolific internationally, shooting some of the biggest names in the business including Gisele and Jessica Stam, as well as many of the original supermodels: Claudia Schiffer, Helena Christensen, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista…

One of his most memorable shoots was the controversial ‘Death Machine’ wall calendar he did for Ksubi (then Tsubi) in 2004. The images featured amazing colour-saturated shots of half naked models hanging out with pokies and motorbikes – accompanied by a poem written by Bailey and Ksubi designers Dan Single and George Gorrow entitled ‘Roadkill, Heroin and My Death Machine’. It’s still considered one of the more iconic and infamous shoots in Australian fashion publishing. Some images are included below and are NSFW.

He worked for a number of publications from GQ to Elle to Vanity Fair.

Richard Bailey will be remembered as one of the respected and admired men in his profession and is survived by his wife Gillian and children Jasper, 13, and Billie, 10.
