Parts Of Aus Fell Below Freezing Last Night Because Winter Is Already Here

Technically Australia does have four distinct weather seasons, but anyone who has ever lived here knows we really only have two: hot and cold. And given that the cold season stretches from ANZAC Day to Grand Final Day, we are now officially in the throes of winter, folks.

The past couple of days have seen big stretches of the east coast shivering through an unusually chilly April blast, and the Bureau of Meteorology is now warning that that early winter chill is set to stretch right through the weekend.
Queensland experienced its coldest April night in over 18 years last night, with parts of central and far north QLD dropping to overnight lows of 5 degrees, which is some 11 degrees below the April overnight average.
In other parts of the country the mercury dipped below freezing last night. Goulburn bottomed out at -3.7, while Canberra shivered through an overnight low of -1.7.
The chilly weather has been brought on by an Antarctic blast, kicking up icy southerly winds and weather patterns that have battered the eastern seaboard.
BoM forecasters are predicting that, while it’s expected to get a little bit warmer over the coming weeks, we’re still in for more than a few days and nights that’ll sit well below monthly averages before winter proper settles in.
While the metropolitan areas of Sydney and Melbourne are set to balance back out again over the course of the upcoming weekend, inland centres and regions are set to cop the brunt of this particular cold front’s force.
Hell yeah, folks. It’s jumper and woodfire season. Bust out those blankets, baby!
