Oi Melbs, Cool Off Over Summer At This Fkn Neon-Lit ‘Car Wash’ Installation

We are literally never going to say no to water misters in the middle of summer, but we’re especially stoked when they come encased in neon-lit installation art.

Modelled after a real-life car wash of all things, a new large-scale artwork is hitting Melbourne next Friday for the official 2016 Architecture Commission.

M@ STUDIO Architect’s 23-metre long structure will be placed smack-bang in the middle of the NGV Garden, where it’ll doubtlessly draw untold thousands of eager Instagrammers.

It’s not all pretty lights and v. pleasant misters, though. The thing appears to be a hyper-vibrant sensory experience that its creators hope will spark discussions about the architecture in Melbourne’s sprawling ‘burbs.

Of course, the conceit here is that car washes are just one of those things we take for granted, and never pay much attention to. This one will probs be visible from space, so it might just force us to have a ponder.

It’s essentially a Howard Arkley painting in three dimensions, or what would’ve happened if Nicolas Winding Refn directed one of Breaking Bad’s earlier episodes. Read: actually very bloody cool.

If artistic interrogations of mundane structures are your bag, it’ll be illuminating the city until April. Oh, it’s free, too. Just as well – the lines for the change machines at actual car washes are goddamn ridiculous.
