No One Wants To Work In Retail

It’s no secret that retail in Australia is struggling at the moment. While the internet is flush with opportunities for reduced-cost purchasing and the Aussie dollar is hovering above parity there’s never been a better time NOT to shop local. It’s not just the shoppers who are experiencing a shift in attitude against bricks and mortar retailers either.

Ragtrader reports that recent surveys of retail industry employees, high school and university students revealed that no one wants to work in retail anymore because it sucks. Or, more specifically, because Australian retail employees expressed a general feeling of lack of acknowledgment and support from superiors, whilst sighting communication issues among gen y and “baby boomers” as key barriers to staff satisfaction.

Anyone who has worked at a major Australian department store alongside a 57-year-old mole named Patricia who’s been employed there since panning for gold was a reasonable alternative and enjoys jeering at your gift wrapping technique, would probably agree that this can be the case.

The research conducted by the Australian Centre for Retail Studies (ACRS) also revealed that there was a strong link between staff satisfaction and overall business revenue. The findings were revealed at a national conference sponsored by Myer, AMP Capital and Pacific Brands, which means for those of you who might be struggling in uninspiring retail positions you should be seeing changes implemented to improve the situation. And, if not, unfortunately that means you’re working for jerks. But! You can go find a new job at Pedestrian’s job site. Rick roll!

*This is the part when I would normally put in a clip from Will & Grace where Jack has to work under a chain smoking bitch manager Dorleen (played by Parker Posey) but I can’t find it, so this’ll do…
