Meet the Winner of the 2013 Pedestrian.TV Photo of the Year

Last night we circulated hard at the Newtown Hotel in Sydney to announce the winners of the 2013 Pedestrian.TV Photography Awards presented by Lumix GX7. An extremely good-looking crowd perused the exhibition of extremely good-looking photos before it was time to reveal our winners.

After taking into account your reader votes, a panel of judges headed up by internationally acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Harmony Korine (Spring Breakers) hand picked the category winners and the photo they deemed to be the very best shot of the past 12 months, the 2013 Pedestrian.TV Photo of the Year.

While we nurse our collective hangovers today, let’s meet this year’s winners:

FASHION WINNER: BELLE STEWART
Belle on her winning image: “I have been taking portraits of red heads for a book I am working on called “Red or Dead”. A response to the alleged genetic decline of the red-head DNA. I spotted 16 yo identical twins Emma and Rachel in a local supermarket, in their school uniforms shopping with their mother. They were serene and dignified, bearing very strong elegant postures, a product of years of elite gymnastics training.”

MUSIC: ANDREW WILSON
Andrew on his winning image: “Bloc Party were one of the major headliners of Future in 2013 and played late in the night. It had been raining for the days in the lead up and right before Bloc Party stepped on stage, the heavens opened up. Most photographers decided to call it a day after having walked through knee deep mud and were soaked to the bone all day. I stayed and probably risked my gear a little too much but continued to shoot
until the shaking from being so cold started to affect my photos. I think this shot really reflects the overall vibe of the day – great music with a constant downpour!”

SOCIAL: LUKE LATTY
Luke on his winning image: “A guy hanging upside down from a moving fan at the craziest house party I have and probably will ever shoot in my life!”

ART/CULTURE: GERWYN DAVIES
Gerwyn on his winning image: “I like to build characters through costume design and photography that are unusual and shift expectations. Fashion is limitless and expressive and I believe we should be more playful and adventurous with the way we dress ourselves.”

TRAVEL: AKILA BERJAOUI
Akila on her winning image: “Positano on film. What more can I say.. this place is HEAVEN ON EARTH!”

INSTAGRAM: EVAN RICHARDS
Evan on his winning image: “Staring contest with an adolescent Snow Monkey as he enjoys the hot springs. Jigokudani Monkey Park, Nagano, Japan.”

SPORT: KIAN BOURKE-STEER
Kian on his winning image: “The photo originated from a bit of pot luck coupled with a determined journey to find some small clean waves. I set off early, trying to get some aerial punts with the assistance of a jet ski. After numerous failed attempts and many tried water angles, I jumped on the back of the ski hoping to get one of troy getting some air. My aim was to make the most of the unique scenery and get the coal mound as a backdrop, eventually I got my shot.”

2013 PHOTO OF THE YEAR with thanks to Lumix GX7
WINNER: GERWYN DAVIES
Harmony’s thoughts on the winning image: “I choose this for Photo of the Year because it reminds me of when I was a kid.”
And Team Panasonic said of the winning shot, “Gerwyn’s photo is fantastic because it is unique, intriguing and most of all fun. It just shows that in photography you are only limited by your imagination.”

Pedestrian would like to congratulate and give multiple high-fives to Gerwyn who has won a Golden Conticket (provided by Contiki) to travel and photograph the world on a Thai Island Hopper.
The tour starts in
Phuket and stops through some of the world’s best most photogenic
beaches, including this guy. We also wanna congratulate all the category winners (who have scored themselves their very own Lumix GX7) AND thank all the brilliant photographers who submitted entries this year. We look forward to seeing next year’s crop of amazing talent – you’ve got 12 months to take the best photo so make ’em count.
