Marc Jacobs Confirms Closure Of Only Marc Jacobs Label You Can Afford

After reports surfaced last week that sartorial stalwart Marc By Marc Jacobs was facing closure, the label’s namesake designer has today confirmed to WWD that the high-street/high-fashion straddling label will be laid to rest as part of Jacobs’ plans to take his eponymous main line public later this year.
According to Jacobs, the merger reflects his and his business partner Robert Duffy’s desire to have one label that traverses the entire spectrum of affordability, including “flip-flops for $30, a well-priced T-shirt; there could be an honesty and integrity in different types of clothes.” The recently-installed creative director of Marc By Marc, Katie Hillier, will continue to bring her singular nous for insanely popular accessories to the company in a yet to be determined role; despite critical acclaim for their joint venture, womenswear design director Luella Bartley remains in limbo.
Jacobs then proceeds to give WWD a lengthy description of what he’s wearing. It’s your dream sloth ensemble:
“I’m sitting here in a $2,000 cashmere/silk sweatshirt hoodie that we’ve made for 15 years and Adidas track pants and a cotton shirt from American Apparel, and I have a Prada fur coat upstairs. On a daily basis I will wear everything from American Apparel to Adidas to Marc Jacobs to Prada. I love that mix of things, that high and low, that rich and poor, all of those contrasts, the everyday and the extraordinary.”
Extraordinary. Okay.
