Weeks after her unexpected split from husband Karl Stefanovic, Cassandra Thorburn has obliquely referenced their separation for the first time in a Facebook post.
Referencing the recent news that Stefanovic’s Today Show had beaten the ratings of Channel 7’s Sunrise for the first time in over a decade, Thorburn celebrated her own contributions to the show.
“Apparently Today Show finally won a year. This took a huge toll on my family and I, and I’m congratulating myself today for all the effort that went into making that [ratings] happen,” Thorburn wrote.
“I’m giving myself a pat on the back tonight, as I know many people will also know how much effort I put into it.”
That statement corroborates the view held by Stefanovic’s associates. Former Today Show host Ben Fordham has previously mentioned the importance of the ex-ABC journo’s influence, saying “there’s no question that Cass is a crucial ingredient in Karl’s success.”
Stefanovic himself said as much in 2015, when he mentioned “she gave up a promising career… and I’m forever thankful and tremendously appreciative of that.”
Thorburn closed the post by saying she had “found a lovely tipple to cheers myself,” courtesy of Stefanovic’s manager.
“Thanks for the red Sharon Finnigan SF Celebrity Management.”
FWIW, Channel 7 has seriously contested the fact that The Today Show came out on top at all. Still, at least one person close to the operation is accepting the ratings as a victory.
