Hot Lukewarm on the heels of Marie Claire’s January body image issue, a minor controversy which featured a sans-photoshop cover of a sans-clothes Jennifer Hawkins, Madison have unveiled a similarly salacious nude cover for their November body image issue featuring 25 year old Perth beauty Jessica Gomes.
“The reason we chose her to be our cover girl, apart from her obvious beauty, is that she has a happy, healthy body image and most of us could take a leaf out of her book,” writes editor Lizzie Renkert. “She’s not super-thin. Yet even though her body is scrutinised and judged every day as part of her job, she embraces her figure – no matter what.”.
These are obviously noble intentions but as with Hawkins’ “body image” cover, media pundits could question Gomes’ effectiveness in promoting healthy and attainable body image standards when compared to, you know, the general public. I mean, Gomes is a model who exists on the curvier end of the body type spectrum, sure, but she’s a model nonetheless. Hers is a profession of perceived perfection and brands such as Sports Illustrated, Victoria’s Secret and P Diddy’s signature fragrance line have all enlisted her services.
Still, Gomes represents a refreshingly curvaceous and realistic version of the female body and that should be applauded. “I think a lot of girls can relate to me because I’m not super-thin and I’ve got boobs and a bum,” she explained (debatable). “And I actually look pretty good.” (not debatable).
